You’re settled in for the evening, the AC kicks on, and then you hear it. A rattle. A hum. Something that definitely wasn’t there last summer. Your HVAC system isn’t usually subtle when something’s off, and June is prime time for those sounds to surface. You’re pushing your system harder than you have in months, and whatever was quietly developing over the winter is now making itself known.
You wouldn’t ignore a strange noise coming from your car and hope it goes away. Your HVAC system works the same way. Some sounds are minor, some are urgent, but none of them should be ignored. Here’s what your system might be trying to tell you.
Banging or Clanking
This is the one that gets your attention fast — and for good reason. A banging or clanking sound usually means something is loose or broken inside the system. It could be a loose part in the blower, an unbalanced fan blade, or in more serious cases, a failing compressor. If you hear this, turn the system off and call for service. The longer it runs, the more damage it can do, and will turn a repair into a replacement.
Rattling
Rattling is the most common HVAC noise, and it covers a wide range of culprits. Sometimes it’s as simple as a loose screw on a panel cover or debris that found its way into the outdoor unit over the winter. Other times it points to something more significant like a failing motor or loose components in the ductwork. Start with the easy stuff (check for visible debris, tighten any loose panels) and if the rattling continues, get it looked at.
Squealing or Screeching
That high-pitched sound isn’t your imagination, and it’s not something to wait out. Squealing typically points to a worn or slipping belt, or a motor bearing that needs lubrication. In some systems it’s a normal startup quirk. But if it’s persistent or getting louder, it’s a sign that a component is under stress and heading toward failure. Catching it early is almost always cheaper than waiting.
Clicking
A single click when your system starts or stops is completely normal. That is just the relay switching on and off. What isn’t normal is rapid, repeated clicking when the system is trying to start. That usually points to a failing capacitor or a problem with the control board. If your system is clicking but not actually starting, don’t keep trying to force it on. Call for service.
Humming
A low hum is usually electrical in nature. It could be a loose wire, a failing contactor, or a motor that’s working harder than it should. It might not stop your system from running, but it’s a sign that something is off and worth addressing before it escalates. Electrical issues left unattended have a way of becoming much bigger problems.
Hissing or Bubbling
These two sounds are closely related and both point to the same likely culprit: your refrigerant. Hissing often indicates a refrigerant leak — pressurized refrigerant escaping through a crack or loose connection. Bubbling suggests air or moisture has gotten into the refrigerant line. Either way, this is NOT a DIY fix. Refrigerant issues require a certified technician and should be addressed promptly, especially heading into peak cooling season.
Banging from the Vents or Ductwork
If the sound is coming from the vents rather than the unit itself, you’re likely dealing with expanding and contracting ductwork. Metal ducts flex with temperature changes and can make a popping or banging sound as a result. It’s often harmless, but if it’s frequent or loud, it could also indicate pressure imbalances or ductwork that needs attention.
The Sound You Should Never Ignore
All of the above have explanations and solutions — but there’s one sound that warrants immediate action: silence when there should be noise. If your system isn’t running at all, or shuts off unexpectedly, something has caused it to stop. In the summer, that’s not just an inconvenience. It’s a problem that needs same-day attention that Xcell can provide.
